Less than a month after announcing its $1.2 billion purchase of Yammer, Microsoft is today saying the acquisition has been completed. In a blog post welcoming the enterprise-focused social networking platform to the Office division, Microsoft says it looks forward "to accelerating the adoption of Yammer’s standalone service, and enhancing the social capabilities in Microsoft’s communication and collaboration offerings."
Yammer also confirmed the finalized deal via its website, noting that CEO David Sacks will continue to head the project in a new role as a Microsoft Corporate Vice President. Sacks is quick to point out that Yammer will remain an independent offering for the foreseeable future. "Under Microsoft, Yammer will remain a stand-alone product with a freemium business model," he writes. "We will maintain our focus on simplicity, innovation and cross-platform experiences and, over time, you will see more connections to SharePoint, Office 365, Dynamics and Skype." More details about Yammer's future roadmap will be discussed in the fall, but for now users won't need to worry about any drastic changes.
